Dear Ephesus: The Church Who Was Right About Everything

The church in Ephesus presents a striking picture of a congregation that appeared to have so much right: it worked hard, persevered through difficulty, rejected false teaching, and remained committed to sound doctrine. Yet in Revelation 2, Jesus identifies a serious problem beneath that outward faithfulness: they had abandoned their first love. The message of Ephesus challenges the church today to recognize that biblical truth, perseverance, discernment, and faithful service are essential, but they are not substitutes for genuine love for Christ. The story of Ephesus, from Paul's extensive ministry there in Acts to Jesus' words in Revelation, reminds believers that a church can be active, doctrinally careful, and outwardly successful while still needing to recover the love and devotion that first characterized its relationship with Christ.
